Over these past few years, I’ve gotten to know the Libenu clients, my neighbors and now friends, and have come to learn many things about myself, about people with special needs and about what it means to be part of a community. Having these young adults live in our community helps us see that people with special needs are in many ways no different than we are. “The need for friendship, inclusion, and community are universal.”

Prior to Libenu, there were no available Jewish residential options in Chicago. The only option for parents of a young adult with special needs were to relocate their entire family to a city where these services were available, or to send their child away.

Libenu is unquestionably a gift to the parents and families of these young adults, whose greatest worry is “What will happen when I am no longer around?” Equally as important is the gift of independence Libenu has given to these young people.
